Samuel

The prophet and last judge who learned to listen to God

Samuel was born in answer to his mother Hannah's prayer and given to serve the Lord under Eli. As a boy he heard God call his name and answered that he was listening. He judged Israel, called them back to God, and anointed both Saul and David as king.

Key verse: 1 Samuel 3:10

Strengths

  • Listened and obeyed God from youth
  • Spoke truth to leaders
  • Prayed faithfully for the people

Struggles

  • His sons did not follow his ways
  • Grieved long over Saul

What Samuel teaches you

Faith. Make room to be still and tell God you are listening, because hearing Him clearly begins with a willing heart.

Family. Your public faithfulness does not automatically pass to your children, so give intentional attention to their hearts at home.

Business and calling. Look past outward appearance when choosing leaders, and seek God's view of character before you promote anyone.
